Goodrich is an ancient village. It has a castle (which is owned by English Heritage and is open from late January for most of the year), a very good primary school, a tennis club, a cricket club and two fine pubs. There is also a very busy village hall offering a wide range of activities to suit many tastes, and of course great walking from along the river or up Coppett Hill.
Whether you live, work, spend leisure time or take a holiday with it is a fine and friendly place to be.
Revd Ben Bentham: has been the vicar for Goodrich with Welsh Bicknor, Llangarron, Llangrove, Marstow, and Welsh Newton with Llanrothal since March 2017. Ben comes originally from Lancashire, and has a background in education, missionary work abroad and parish ministry. He is married to Lisa, who currently works in China, and they have twin sons, Jonathan, who is in the Royal Navy, and David, who is a civil servant. There is also an Associate Minister, Revd Richard Jones, whose background is in the Diplomatic Service.
You can read about the history of St Giles’ Church elsewhere on this website.
St Giles’ is very much a community church of Goodrich and the surrounding area and our aim is both to support and be part of the community. Like virtually all country churches the members work hard to raise money to maintain the building and the ministry. Each year there are several events, full details of which are always in the Border News.
We have strong links with the Primary School. One of the clergy leads collective worship there every week and Revd Ben is a foundation governor. At least three times a year the whole school comes up to the church for an act of worship. We trust that the school values its relationship with St Giles’.
The congregation of St Giles’ Church is quite small but active and very welcoming. We are always delighted to see new people come to worship with us, and like most churches we would especially welcome those who might want to get involved. Worship is fairly traditional at the moment. We have a decent, well maintained organ and a good organist who regularly delights us, and the singing is enthusiastic.
